The Void at Disney Springs

Note: As of October 2020, this location has permanently closed.

Thanks to constant theme park competition, Orlando is a hotbed for unique and immersive experiences and provides us with endless possibilities to entertain guests who come to town. One of our favorite places to take people is The Void at Disney Springs. If you are a fan of laser tag or paintball, this is the experience for you.

The Basics

The Void is a completely immersive experience that incorporates virtual reality into an action game. Think of it as a real-life video game where you are in the middle of the action. The entire experience lasts around half an hour, although the VR portion is about 15 minutes.

There are two basic experiences you can choose from – Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire or the newer Ralph Breaks VR. We have gone through both experiences and while they’re very similar and use the same technology, the experiences are different enough to merit trying each one once or twice.

Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire

After you’ve signed a pretty standard security waiver you’re given a personalized wristband and led into a room where you are briefed on your mission for the rebellion. The video features Rogue One’s Cassian Andor telling you that you’ll be disguised as stormtroopers who must infiltrate an Imperial stronghold on the planet of Mustafar to recover a piece of vital intelligence.

You are then instructed to choose a color for your stormtrooper – this is going to be how your party identifies each other apart during the experience, so it’s best for everyone to choose a different color.

Once you are all set, you head into the loading area where you can lock up any valuables in small lockers. Then, you are given a backpack and a VR headset. The backpack is a bit on the heavy side, but given the length of the experience, it’s not too uncomfortable.

The Experience

Once you’ve gotten your gear, you head to the first room where you pull down your VR headset and the transportation to hyper-reality begins. This is a great opportunity to get your bearings and look at your other teammates. It’s also pretty crazy to put your arms out in front of you and see they are actual stormtrooper arms.

We don’t want to spoil the rest of the experience too much, but needless to say, you’ll get a storm blaster.

Ralph Breaks VR

The waiver and wristbands are the same, but in lieu of picking Stormtrooper colors, you have a choice between six characters. These characters determine how you’ll look in the experience. Don’t forget to read the card of the character you choose, it’ll give valuable advice for the game ahead.

The pre-game video is also different. Ralph and Vanellope explain why you’re going into the internet and have a bit of silliness. Once the video is completed the rest of the experience is the same as Star Wars (other than the game itself of course).

How to Book

You can reserve your experience ahead of time or walk in and check availability. If you are going on a Friday night or a busy weekend day, you may want to look online to see what the availability looks like – especially if you have a big group.

Our Verdict?

We can’t say enough good things about The Void. We’ve gone through the experience a few times and while the Star Wars storyline is essentially the same each time, we don’t think it takes away from the fun. We really enjoy bringing other people with us to see how they enjoy it.

Ralph Wrecks VR is definitely different than Star Wars, and in some ways is even more difficult, but is still fun nonetheless. Each experience has a ton of replay value and you’ll not regret doing the experiences over and over again.

Be sure and provide your email address to The Void as you’re signing the waiver because once the experience is finished, you’ll be emailed some personalized stats about your game.

We say The Void is a perfect experience for visitors and locals alike because it has something for everyone. Adults will love the competition and action the experience provides, kids will love the fact they’re basically inside of a video game, parents can do something fun and cool with their kids and technophiles can geek out about the cutting-edge VR.
