5 Tips for Navigating Disney in a Face Mask

In a COVID-19 world, many things have changed — including how you enjoy a day at the theme parks. While it is going to feel different wearing a face mask at Disney, and honestly probably a bit uncomfortable, here are some tips to help you stay safe.

Note: This post was originally written in the summer of 2020. As of July 30, 2021 Walt Disney World Resort, as well as Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, have adjusted their mask policies regarding indoor mask use.

First things first, it’s important to set your expectations. Is it hot in Florida? Yes. Is it uncomfortable wearing a mask? Yes. Is it uncomfortable to wear a mask in the Florida heat? Yes.

But, consider the cast members who have to work their entire shift in not only a hot costume, but a mask. This may be a bit harsh, but if you think it’s going to be too uncomfortable for you and your family, or you’re going to complain to everyone you encounter then just don’t come. Hold off on your vacation.

These days are especially hard for the cast members, so being extra nice can really go a long way. They’ve been through a lot and enforcing these rules isn’t easy on them.

Ok, now that we’re off of our soap box, here are our tips:

#1 Choose your face mask wisely

The type of mask you bring will definitely help you feel more comfortable. Our favorite masks by far are the ones made by Vera Bradley. They are two-layer cotton masks with a slit on the inside for an optional filter. We really like these masks because the design fits really well and the ear loops are pretty comfortable. Vera Bradley also has a pleated version of their masks that have the straps go around your head rather than your ears.

#2 Bring multiple face masks for each person

Changing your mask for a clean, dry mask definitely helps you feel more refreshed. Use a Ziploc bag for your clean masks and then pack another bag to keep your used masks. Something as simple as changing your face mask can make a Disney day a lot more enjoyable.

#3 Hydrate

One of our tips from our post about tips for staying cool at the parks is just as valid now with a face mask – hydrate. With a face covering, it may not be as top of mind to drink water because it can seem like more of a “process.” Still, it’s important to stay diligent about making sure you and your whole group are drinking water, Powerade, or some electrolyte drink.

Nuun-tablets
We really like Nuun tablets (disclaimer, we’ve been ambassadors for the last three years, but have been using these for about twice as long). These tablets are easy to plop into a water bottle and once dissolved you get a great electrolyte-powered drink.

#4 Bring a cooling towel

We’ve used cooling towels for years at RunDisney races. It feels so nice to have something nice and cool around your neck to ward off some of the Florida heat. These are pretty inexpensive these days are some come in their own little carrying case which is nice when you aren’t using it.

#5 Take advantage of air conditioning

One thing we’ve heard from family and friends who have visited us is that Florida is so hot, which is why taking a break in the AC is crucial. Although restrictions have adapted over time and you can wear your masks outside, it’s still nice to get a little break by getting off your feet and into some cool air.

Relaxation station at Pizzafari in Animal Kingdom is a place to relax and enjoy some air conditioning.
Walt Disney World Resort had relaxation stations around the parks, but as the mask restrictions have adapted over time these designated stations have gone away. You now need to wear masks indoors regardless of vaccination status.
